How to get support
Two ways, and both land in the same place:
- From inside the app — Settings → Tell us what is wrong with it. Type it, tap Send it. If you are signed in your account email comes with it, so there is nothing to fill in.
- By email — hello@smartmetal.ca.
Either way it helps if you include:
- Your iPhone model and iOS version
- The app version (find it on the app's Settings screen)
- The job, and roughly when you finished the walk
- What you were trying to do, and what happened
Frequently asked questions
What does the app actually do?
You talk for about two minutes — what got done, what is holding you up, what came in on the truck, what tomorrow looks like — and take at least one photo of whatever proves it. Tap Finish and you get the day's report back by email: the same eight headings every day, the work filed by area, the issues you flagged, the materials, the photos, and the word-for-word transcript at the back. Anything you said that needs doing becomes a task that carries forward until it is closed.
Does it work with no signal?
Yes, for the part that matters. Recording and shooting photos is entirely on the phone. The one step that needs a connection is Finish at the end of the walk — do that from the truck. If it fails, everything is still on the phone and you can send again later.
Does the app decide what's a problem?
No, and this is deliberate. It organizes what you said and files it under the area you said you were in. It does not price anything, decide what needs doing, or tidy "out by about six inches" into a measurement you never took. If a section is empty it says so instead of writing a sentence you never said. Every line carries the number of the note it came from.
Read it before you forward it. It goes out with your name on it.
How do I flag something so the super sees it?
Say so out loud. "Flag that", "that's a blocker", "this is going to hold us up" — anything like that lands it where a superintendent reads first. There is no button, because there is no taking your glove off at the end of a shift to press one.
How does the task list work?
Say it — "we still need the engineer's answer on that curb" — and it becomes a task. It rolls forward to tomorrow and the day after, and the report shows how many walks it has been carried through. That number is the nag. Say it got done and it closes, with the note you said it in beside it. Or tick it off yourself; the report tells a reader which of the two it was.
Can I send the report to my PM as well?
Yes. Settings → Send a copy to, and every report from then on is emailed to your account address and that one second address. Clear the field and it stops with the next walk. There is no other recipient.
Can I find something I said months ago?
Yes — search covers every word of every walk, back to the first one. "When did we first flag the level 3 shafts?" is a question with an answer.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Walk as often as you like — every walk, report, task, search and export is open, and nothing is held back. There is nothing in the app to buy.
Then what are the ads for?
They are what pays for it. One small banner at the bottom of a few screens: never while you are recording, never over a report, and never on the privacy page. The ads are non-personalised — there is no advertising identifier, no tracking prompt, and nothing you record, photograph or type ever reaches an ad network.
I got a new phone. Where did my walks go?
Sign in with the same email and they come back — your walks, reports and tasks are attached to your account, not to the handset. If something still does not show, email and it will be sorted by hand.
Do my photos end up in my camera roll?
No. Photos taken in the app are written straight into the app's own storage and are never added to your iOS photo library. The app never reads your library either.
What happens to the recording?
It is uploaded when you tap Finish, turned into text, and then deleted — within minutes, long before the report is finished. What survives is the transcript, the photos and the report. There is no setting that turns that off, because there is nothing to turn off.
Can I record with gloves on?
Honestly: only a touch-capable glove. Leather and cut-resistant gloves register nothing on a phone screen at any button size, and no app can fix that. The buttons are sized for a bare thumb in bad weather, which is the realistic case.
The reminders are annoying me.
Settings → turn reminders OFF, or change the two times. They are scheduled by your own phone, so nothing about your schedule leaves the device and we cannot push you anything.
How do I get all my data out?
Settings → Export everything. One file with every job, walk, transcript, report and task on your account, plus download links for the files still in storage. It is always there and it is never held back.
How do I delete my account and everything in it?
Settings → Delete account, inside the app. That permanently removes your account, your transcripts, your photos, your reports and your tasks. It cannot be undone, so export first if you want to keep any of it.
Privacy
Audio and photos you send are processed by third-party services to transcribe and organize them. Read exactly what goes where, and how long it is kept, in the Privacy Policy.
